Using dentures and partials for smile restoration and repair

Dr. Jamie Richard of Dentistry at Golden Ridge offers both full and partial dentures to patients in Golden, Colorado. While they may look similar, there are some important differences that should be considered before choosing which type of denture is best for you.

The differences between full and partial dentures

Dentures are essentially removable appliances that take the place of missing teeth. Full or complete dentures replace all of your natural teeth on either the upper jaw or lower jaw, while partials have replacement teeth that fill in gaps created by one or more missing teeth. Dentures are made from a combination of acrylic and metal bases, fitting securely and comfortably into your mouth for better function and appearance. Partial dentures can be made for the front teeth, back teeth, or all of the teeth.

Partial dentures can also be fixed within your mouth using dental implants if you need long-term support for your new prosthetics. The metal framework of your partials is connected to strategically placed implants, which can be permanently affixed to your jawbone.

Which one is right for me?

Both are designed to replace missing teeth and improve the way you chew and speak. However, there are a few key advantages and disadvantages that can help you decide which method is best for you:

Complete dentures may have a longer lifespan than removable partial dentures. However, they require careful maintenance to ensure their longevity, including regular cleanings by Dr. Richard every six months or so. Fixed partial dentures offer better support than removable ones but may need to be replaced at a higher cost over time.

Dentures are generally affordable but require frequent appointments for adjustments and relines to ensure they fit correctly. Concerns about speech and eating may arise with full dentures, especially as you get used to them, but most patients can adapt. Fixed partial dentures (bridges) allow for better chewing and speaking function than removable ones but are typically more expensive overall.
